What’s In It For Me?

Here are two versions of a website home page:
#1 – We offer the best value and service in our 20 mile radius. If you need a new widget, we have it. We can create a product line and service menu that is the best in the business.
#2 – When you partner with us, you get a company focused on solving your problems and equipping you with the tools you need to service your customers.
“We do” versus “You get’. It’s always better to give than to receive, right? So when I read website copy (OK, maybe not as bland as this but you get the idea) that focuses on what the business does instead of what the customer will get by doing business with that company, I have to wonder, what is the company’s goal? Is it to shout out all the acclamations and awards, being the biggest, bestest and mostest? Or as a business, do you want to serve your customers, become partners with them and truly provide concrete solutions and value to doing business with you? It’s always about the customer – always. And if you can’t truly give the customer what he wants, then perhaps he really shouldn’t be your customer.
