In the world of social networking, the famous movie quote, “If you build it, they will come” does not hold true. You must remember that. If you are patting yourself on the back for finally uploading your profile photo and finishing the last five percent of your profile outline, don’t become too celebratory. The way to successful social networking on sites like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook is more than simply creating a profile and waiting for followers. Once you have your page, you must reach out and build your community. Start with your friends. Then learn who they know. Join groups or become “fans” of businesses with which you want to do business. Ask for recommendations and give some in return. You must become an active participant in the world of social networking in order to benefit from any ROI. Engage your community continually so it becomes active, healthy, and eventually prosperous.
